The 1881 census shows Elizabeth Smith aged 2 living with her father, William Smith, at 35 Windsor Rd., Neath. Also living at that address are James and Mary Ann Hawkes.William Smith is a groom and James Hawkes is a general laborer.

In the 1991 census James and Mary Ann Hawkes are living at 31 Windsor Rd. and Elizabeth is shown as their adopted daughter. We do not know what happened to William Smith.

Our Seymour family oral tradition is that Elizabeth was working as an actress in Cheltenham under the name of Lizzie Hawkes when she met her husband-to-be George Seymour.
